Heavy Metal Theology

Two philosophies and perspectives have never meshed so well while maintaining different beliefs, than Slayer’s “South of Heaven” & Soulfly’s “Prophecy”.

South of Heaven by Slayer

“South of Heaven” is an album filled with rage ignited by religious contradictions backed by hypocrisy and condemnation.  In a cruel world, an unsettled mind will not be satisfied with “Ignorance is Bliss”. Corrupt preachers using God to serve themselves are confronted with Slayer’s razor sharp riffs and blunt truth, “There is no Heaven without Hell”.

Prophecy by Soulfly

Metal’s answer to nihilism lies within “Prophecy”. An album fused with metal, faith, and Brazilian influences.  Soulfly says life is a journey, not the destination.  Cynicism is fought with motivation, inspiration, redemption, and salvation.  Where Slayer blames God or “absence of God”, Soulfly maintains faith in a higher power, however struggles with humanity.  Reality vs Destiny.  Where Slayer would say God is dead, Soulfly says you can’t kill Faith.  Should we blame it all on God or the Devil, or just ourselves?  Either way, both albums make me wanna fuck someone up.  So there it is.
